The 4th ASEAN Architects Congress, Minister Basuki Encourages the Role of Architects in the Development of Quality, Aesthetic and Sustainable Infrastructure and Settlements

Makassar, South Sulawesi, ABIM (27/7/2023) – Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Basuki Hadimuljono attended the 4th ASEAN Architect Congress 2023 which was organized by the Indonesian Architects Association (IAI) in Makassar, Thursday (27/7).
Architects, according to Minister Basuki, are crucial to the development of infrastructure. The scope of architects is not only in their native country but also globally, particularly in this global era. Thus, a Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) was approved by all ASEAN member states in 2005 in order to boost the competitiveness of ASEAN architects.

“The ASEAN MRA enables ASEAN architects to achieve mutual recognition, collaborate across borders, share knowledge, and promote regional development. There are currently 681 registered ASEAN architects. I think ASEAN architects can maintain their superiority and global competitiveness by fostering a culture of continuous innovation and learning.” Minister Basuki said.

Under the ASEAN MRA framework, the Ministry of PUPR is responsible for ensuring the competence of the construction workforce in Indonesia, both nationally and internationally, including architects.

“Several projects show the collaboration between the PUPR Ministry and Indonesian Architects. According to Minister Basuki, one of them is the preservation of structures and regions of cultural heritage, such as the rehabilitation of Gelora Bung Karno for the 2018 Asian Games, the rehabilitation of Johar Market, the renovation of the Istiqlal Mosque, and the reconstruction of the Gadang House in South Solok.” Minister Basuki explained.

Indonesian architects played an important role in the development of the National Tourism Strategic Area (KSPN) which was implemented in 5 DPSPs namely Lake Toba, Borobudur, Manado-Likupang-Bitung, Mandalika and Labuan Bajo. As well as, playing a role in designing infrastructure at IKN Nusantara such as the Palace Area, Executive, Legislative and Judiciary Office Areas, Worship Complexes, and the _Sumbu Kebangsaan_.

On this occasion, the inauguration of the Indonesian Architects Council (DAI) was also held, which is responsible for the development of architects in Indonesia. The newly appointed DAI member is Imam Santoso Ernawi, completing the composition of the other DAI members. Minister Basuki hopes that DAI will further enhance professionalism, competence and collaboration among architects in ASEAN.

“I believe this congress can become a platform for fostering partnerships between ASEAN architects, and will be an important milestone in solving problems related to the professional practice of architecture between ASEAN countries,” Minister Basuki said.

The Minister of Trade Zulkifli Hasan, Makassar Mayor Mohammad Ramdhan Pomanto, Bina Marga Director General Hedy Rahadian, Cipta Karya Director General Diana Kusumastuti, and Expert Staff to the Minister for Technology, Industry, and Environment Endra S. Atmawidjaja were all in attendance.(ABIM)
