Minister Basuki Joins President Jokowi in Filling Sepaku Semoi Dam, Providing Raw Water for IKN Nusantara

North Penajam Paser, East Kalimantan, ABIM (22/9/2023) – Basuki Hadimuljono, Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR), accompanied President Jokowi during the impounding of the Sepaku Semoi Dam on Thursday (09/21) in Sepaku District, North Penajam Paser, East Kalimantan Province.

Minister Basuki clarified that the construction of the Sepaku Semoi Dam will provide 2,000 liters/second of raw water to the IKN region and 500 liters/second to Balikpapan.

“With the Sepaku Semoi Dam, IKN’s raw water supply will remain adequate until 2030. We will increase this in the future by building the Batu Lepek Dam and the Selamatyu Dam,” Minister Basuki added.

Director General of Water Resources Bob Arthur Lombogia added that in addition to providing raw water, the Sepaku Semoi Dam can reduce flooding by up to 232 m3/second or 55% in the IKN region and Sepaku District.

“The Sepaku Semoi Dam serves not only as a source of raw water for IKN, but also as a flood control mechanism, as there are sometimes floods in downstream areas,” Bob explained.

To date, 97% of the physical construction of the Sepaku Semoi Dam has been completed. The primary scope of work comprises the construction of the main dam, the office of the Dam Management Unit (UPB), the observation post, and the main gate.

Bob explained, “There is still 3% of work to be completed, but the Sepaku Semoi Dam can already be filled or impounded because it meets the requirements, as recommended by the Dam Safety Commission (KKB).”

Bob added that the completion of the Sepaku Semoi Dam is expected for December 2023. However, the process of impounding the dam has been ongoing since the initial 100 liters/second discharge.

“As a result of environmental challenges, there was a reduction. However, it is now constant at 100 litres per second. Minister Basuki has informed the President that 100 litres per second is sufficient to fill the dam for the next three months, until December 2023. Only then it can reach the normal elevation or the height of the dam’s spillway lighthouse,” concluded Bob.

Director General of Water Resources Bob Arthur Lombogia, Director General of Highways Hedy Rahadian, and Director General of Human Settlements were also present together with Minister Basuki. Diana Kusumastuti, Director General of Construction Rachman Arief Dienaputra, Expert Staff to the Minister of PUPR for Technology, Industry and the Environment Endra S.
