The Ministry of Public Works and Housing finishes building the IMS GBK in time for Indonesia to host the FIBA World Cup in 2023

Jakarta, ABIM (30/6/2023) – The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing through the Directorate General of Cipta Karya has completed the construction of the Indoor Multifunction Stadium (IMS) in the Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) area, Jakarta. The GBK IMS development was carried out in order to welcome the implementation of the FIBA World Cup which will be held on August 25 – September 10 2023. Indonesia was chosen as co-host along with Japan and the Philippines.

Director of Strategic Infrastructure of the Directorate General of Cipta Karya Essy Asiah said, the Ministry of Public Works and Housing as the controller for building regulations received an assignment from President Jokowi to prepare a multifunctional indoor venue.

“When Indonesia was appointed as the host for the 2023 FIBA World Cup, we did not yet have a building that was representative of holding a world-class event. Therefore, IMS was built as the largest indoor multifunctional facility in Indonesia,” said Essy in the BCI – Construction+ Focus: Sustainable Design, Construction & Safety for Indoor Stadium activity at IMS GBK, Jakarta, Tuesday (6/27).

Although originally built for the 2023 FIBA World Cup, IMS can also be used for sports facilities other than basketball, such as volleyball, badminton, tennis, MMA, athletics, and others. IMS can also be used for non-sports facilities such as concerts, meetings, conventions and exhibitions.

Essy also added that the IMS development had met the Green Building Technical Standards (BGH) by achieving the Middle title in planning and implementation. In addition, IMS has also utilized Building Information Modeling (BIM) 7D Asset Management. Thanks to these achievements, the construction of the IMS has succeeded in becoming a guideline/ pilot for the construction of sports venues for FIBA competitions.

IMS is located in Block 10 of the Gelora Bung Karno Region (GBK) Senayan in Jakarta with a land area of 31,826 m2 belonging to the Ministry of State Secretariat under PKGBK management. The building is 50,398 m2 in area and can accommodate an audience capacity of 16,000 people.

The construction of the IMS was carried out by PT Adhi Karya – PT Nindya Karya – PT Penta (KSO) with a budget sourced from the State Budget through the 2021 – 2023 Multi Years Contract (MYC) scheme worth IDR 640.4 billion. IMS has been handed over for management to PPKGBK in June 2023. Meanwhile, the construction has been 100% complete and is awaiting inauguration by President Jokowi.

In this Construction+ Focus activity, the Director of Technical Development, Directorate General of Cipta Karya, Dian Irawati, was also present as a guest speaker in a panel presentation that reviewed building regulations, planning, and the implementation of IMS building construction. The activity continued with a project tour to conduct a direct observation of IMS GBK which will later become the venue for the 2023 FIBA World Cup.(ABIM)
