Minister Basuki Signs an Agreement Between Indonesia and Sweden for the Production of Renewable Energy from Waste

Stockholm, Sweden, ABIM (24/8/2023) – The Government of Indonesia through the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) and the Government of Sweden through Swedfund International AB signed a cooperation agreement in implementing waste conversion technology into renewable energy in Indonesia.

The signing was carried out by the Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Basuki Hadimuljono and CEO of Swedfund International AB Maria Håkansson at the Indonesian Embassy in Stockholm, Sweden, Wednesday (8/23).

According to Minister Basuki, the PUPR Ministry is dedicated to the principles of environmental-based and sustainable infrastructure development, one of which was through the development of waste management.

“One of them is the use of Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) technology which turns waste into a renewable energy source,” Minister Basuki said.

Minister Basuki said that the majority of Indonesia’s garbage is managed by using landfills, despite the fact that waste generation represents a significant potential energy source.

“For this reason, this collaboration takes into account the sufficient expertise, capability and technology of the Swedish Government for processing domestic solid waste and converting it into renewable energy sources,” Minister Basuki said.

Through the Directorate General of Cipta Karya, the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing and Swedfund International AB, which offers grants to support feasibility studies or other technical help, are working together on this project.

Previously, the Government of Indonesia through the Ministry of PUPR had developed the use of Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) technology to make waste a renewable energy source for an alternative to coal in the Steam Power Plant (PLTU) which was implemented at the Kebun Kongok Final Disposal Site (TPA), Lombok, Nusa Tenggara. West Southeast (NTB).

With a processing capacity of 120 tons of garbage per day, this technological application was constructed to the east of the Kebun Kongok TPA complex on a 7,000 m2 plot of land owned by the Mataram City Government. This capacity can be processed to create 15 tons of trash that has been processed for RDF, which is used by the Jeranjang PLTU, at a rate of approximately 40.19 tons per day.

The Indonesian Ambassador to Sweden and Latvia Kamapradipta Isnomo, the Director General of Housing Iwan Suprijanto, the Deputy for Facilities and Infrastructure of Bappenas Ervan Maksum, the Expert Staff to the Minister of PUPR for Technology, Industry, and the Environment Endra S. Atmawidjaja, and the Main Director of PT. Brantas Abipraya Sugeng Rochadi were with Minister Basuki.(ABIM)
