Binjai, North Sumatera, ABIM (25/8/2024) – President of the Republic of Indonesia Joko Widodo, along with Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Basuki Hadimuljono, Governor of North Sumatra Edy Rahmayadi, Mayor of Medan Bobby Afif Nasutionand, Mayor of Binjai Amir Hamzah and Regent of Deli Serdang Ashari Tambunan, inaugurated the Regional Drinking Water Supply System (SPAM) Fieldworkers in Binjai City, North Sumatra, Friday (8/25).
The president Jokowi emphasized the value of water in daily life. “I recently returned from Africa and I deeply feel the value of water for life.” President Jokowi said. It is expected that the 1100 liters per second Mebidang SPAM will be able to supply all of the water needed in the Mebidang area.
“Alhamdulillah, the Mebidang SPAM, which had a budget of Rp. 948 billion, was finished this morning. The federal, provincial, and district/city governments are working together on this. Development will likewise move swiftly if the cooperation continues in this manner, according to President Jokowi.
In order for the community to directly benefit, President Jokowi also gave local governments advice to focus on sustainability.
President Jokowi stated, “I requested the governors, regents and mayors to follow up on connections to 88,000 households, because 440,000 people are involved, which is a very large number.”
Additionally, Minister Basuki stated that the Directorate General of Human Settlements through North Sumatra BPPW will implement the Drinking Water Treatment Plant (WTP) and the Main Distribution Network (JDU) in phases between 2018 and 2023.
“SPAM services are prioritized to meet domestic needs so that people enjoy high-quality drinking water at reasonable prices, continuously for 24 hours, and enhance public health associated with clean water.” Minister Basuki explained.
Director General of Cipta Karya Diana Kusumastuti added, prior to the construction of the WTP, in Phase I, the Directorate General of Water Resources was constructing a Raw Water Intake through the Sumatra II River Basin Office with a capacity of 2,300 liters/second, as well as a raw water transmission pipe with a diameter of 900 mm.
“In addition to the WTP, there is an intake that receives raw water from the Bingei River. We also have three offtakers in Medan, Binjai, and Deli Serdang,” Diana added.
The 60,000 House Connections (SR) in Medan City, 12,000 SR in Binjai City, and up to 16,000 SR in Kab. Deli Serdang make up the 88,000 House Connections (SR).
