Minister Basuki: Clean Water and Sanitation as a Global Agenda Priority

Beijing,China, ABIM (13/9/2023) – In accordance with the 6th Sustainable Development Goal (TPB/SDGs), the Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) encourages governments/heads of state around the world to prioritize clean water and sanitation.

“The acceleration of the sixth SDG is to ensure that everyone has access to clean water and sustainable sanitation by 2030. All stakeholders, including political leaders, need to be aware of this on a worldwide scale, Minister Basuki stated on Monday, September 11, at the Third worldwide Water Security Seminar Implementation of SDGs 6 Progress and Monitoring in Beijing, China.

Minister Basuki claims that the rise in population and industrial activity has been correlated with a sharp rise in the world’s water demand. Meanwhile, environmental deterioration and climate change make it harder to maintain water quality and availability.

In 2022, there will be 2.2 billion people without access to safe drinking water, or around 27% of the global population. By 2022, 43% of the world’s population, or 3.5 billion people, won’t have access to safe sanitation facilities, according to Minister Basuki.

According to Minister Basuki, the Indonesian government has made substantial efforts to guarantee that everyone in Indonesia has access to clean, safe drinking water and adequate sanitary facilities. The government is completely committed to reaching the sixth SDG target.

“The Indonesian government has taken significant steps with various urban and rural clean water supply programs until 2022.” Currently, 90% of people have access to clean water, while 80% have access to sanitation. “This achievement reflects Indonesia’s commitment to ensuring a healthier and cleaner environment for everyone,” he said.

Minister Basuki hopes that the XVIII World Water Congress which is taking place in Beijing can strengthen and unite global commitment in realizing water-related agendas. It is hoped that the results of this congress can be continued in the 10th World Water Forum which will be held in 2024 in Bali, Indonesia.

“One of the sub-themes that will be discussed at the 10th World Water Forum in 2024 is Water for Security and Prosperity. “This sub-theme is in line with our commitment to realizing water conservation for future generations,” he said.

The event was attended by the Indonesian Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China Djauhari Oratmangun, Expert Staff to the Minister of PUPR for Technology, Industry and the Environment Endra Saleh Atmawidjaja, Special Staff to the Minister of PUPR for Water Management Firdaus Ali and Assistant Deputy for Watershed Management and Resource Conservation Nature of the Coordinating Ministry for Marves Mochamad Saleh Nugrahadi.(ABIM)
