Jakarta, ABIM (17/5/2024) – Indonesia has introduced numerous sustainable water management practices for other countries to emulate at the 10th World Water Forum, including the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing’s (PUPR) efforts to combat Lake Toba pollution.

For the Parapat Waste Water Management Installation (IPAL), the Ministry of PUPR has constructed a pipeline network that will link Parapat, Simalungun Regency, and Ajibata, Toba Regency.

The construction of the IPAL network aims to prevent pollution of Lake Toba waters as well as to support the development of Lake Toba tourism in North Sumatra Province, which President Joko Widodo has designated as one of the 5 Super Priority Tourism Destination (DPSP) areas.

According to PUPR Minister Basuki Hadimuljono, the Regional Settlement Infrastructure Centre (BPPW) North Sumatra has been in charge of building the IPAL of Parapat since September 2020, with a budget of IDR 59.42 billion.

“Preventing water pollution in Lake Toba is a good practice that can be highlighted in the 10th World Water Forum activities,” said Basuki at a recent event.

The construction of the Parapat IPAL network began with the construction of Jalan Sisingamangaraja, followed by Jalan Anggarajim, Sosor Saba Terminal, and Pantai Gratis IPAL. The IPAL was then processed on the banks of the Sijambur Ajibata area, next to maturation and sludge drying tanks, as well as facultative ponds.

The construction of the IPAL network means that domestic and hotel wastewater does not pollute Lake Toba.

The 10th World Water Forum will be held in Nusa Dua, Bali, from May 18 to 25, 2024, with the theme “Water for Shared Prosperity”. The 10th World Water Forum’s sub-themes are Water Security and Prosperity, Water for Humans and Nature, Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, Governance, Water Cooperation and Diplomacy, Sustainable Water Financing, and Knowledge and Innovation.(ABIM)
